Staying Healthy: Exercise tips for you and your big dog

If you have a large or giant breed dog, you probably both enjoy getting outside and exercising together. Here are some tips for activities that you can do together to stay fit and have fun!

Fetch Races - Grab your dog’s favorite toy and give it a toss. Twist up the game by racing your dog to it and see who gets to it first. Stay away from throwing sticks, however, since they can splinter and cause injury.

“Dogstacle” Course - First, put some fitness steps or similar household item around your backyard. Next, place your dog on his leash and walk through the course at a quick pace. When you reach a step, do an exercise like to touches, modified push-ups or leg squats to give yourself a solid workout.

Hiking - Your big dog loves exploring as much as you do. Why not pull out the leash and take your dog with you the next time you lace up your hiking boots! Choose a trail that’s the right length and elevation for both of your abilities and take enough water & a dog bowl to keep you both well-hydrated.

Things to remember:

  • Large and giant breed dogs can be much more prone to joint issues. Regular exercise is critical to maintain a healthy weight since obesity and inactivity are the leading risk factors for joint problems.
  • Please consult with your veterinarian before starting an exercise program with your dog.
  • If you have a large breed puppy, start your exercise routine slowly. Excessive or intense physical activities like a daily run may put stress on your puppy’s developing bones.

Special care for large and giant breed puppies

Dogs that are considered large or giant breeds have different nutritional needs than small and medium sized dogs. Every puppy is born with their bones still developing, but large breed puppies are more susceptible to bone and joint issues during their first year of life. Large breeds reach 50 percent of their body weight when they are around 5 months of age. Smaller dogs reach 50 percent of their body weight at around 4 months of age.

The growth rates of all puppies are dependent on the food that they eat. Puppies should be fed to grow at an average, rather than a maximum, growth rate. Compared to smaller-sized puppies, large breed puppies need levels of fat and calcium that are restricted to moderate their rate of growth. They’ll still reach their full-grown size, just over a longer period of time, which will result in healthy development of bones and joints for these breeds. The levels of calcium and fat in Hill’s® Science Diet® Puppy Large Breed dog food are limited to ensure a healthy growth rate.
